Wondering how to increase happiness in your life? Here are a few tips:
1. Know yourself well. Gretchen Rubin says "Although I can choose what I do, I can't choose what I like to do." So admit that just because something is fun for another person, it may not be fun to you! Wow...that is freeing. Painting, swimming, doing crossword puzzles....many people find these fun activities but I don't. Baking, reading, going shopping...those are things I love! She goes on to say, "We can build a happy life only on the foundation of our own natures, interests, and values." I have found that the more faithfully I am "Beth" in my life, the happier I will be!
2. Have something enjoyable to look forward to. Anticipate a quiet night alone, a walk with your loved one, lunch with a friend, a vacation. Learn to savor the enjoyable moments in your life. Voice how excited you are about an upcoming event....this will increase your enjoyment level.
3. Strengthen relationships with other people. Rubin says, "For most of us, time, energy and money are in short supply, so when we're trying to figure out how to get the biggest happiness bang for the buck, it's wise to spend on strengthening bonds with family, friends, and coworkers. Should you splurge on a new pair of boots or a train ticket to your college reunion? Should you stay home watching TV or make plans to meet a friend? A decision that strengthens your ties to other people is likely to make you happier."
